Vània is a recreation of Anton Chekhov’s masterful work Uncle Vanya (1897) in a monologue format. Simon Stephens proposes a rereading of Chekhov’s text that takes place in the present, and far from the tsarist Russia, exploring the humor of this universal classic.

Vània can be defined as a mosaic of characters entrapped in a stately house at the outskirts of the big city, where they spent what it is supposed to be their last summer there. As it happens in other texts by Chekhov, what really matters is not the story’s plot, but the unknown aspects of the characters’ life: their real previous life, and their mood. With more or less resignation, they assist the realization of their unavoidable fate.
