Punta Ballena is a low, wooded promontory just west of Punta del Este where pine-covered slopes meet rocky cliffs and small sandy coves; it’s best known for its cluster of whitewashed buildings perched on the headland and for offering peaceful coastal walks, swimming spots and wide Atlantic panoramas.

What Makes It Special

The headland is home to Casapueblo, Carlos Páez Vilaró’s iconic whitewashed cliffside complex — part museum, part gallery, hotel and restaurant — whose terraces and dramatic architecture provide one of the most memorable sunset vantage points in the area.

Insider Tips

Plan to arrive in late afternoon to explore the coastal trails and stake out a terrace for sunset at Casapueblo; parking and seating fill up in summer, so bring water and sun protection, and check opening times for the museum/gallery beforehand.
